Toner cartridges explained
Toner cartridges which are often referred to as laser toners contain a dry toner powder, consisting of a mixture of carbon and polymer. The first part of the printing process is for the laser to create an electrostatic image on the laser drum. The toner powder is then transferred onto the image on the laser drum and as the paper is fed through the machine it collects the toner powder from the drum. At this point the toner powder is lying on the surface of the paper and still needs to be adhered permanently. In the final part of the process the paper passes through the heated fuser unit which melts the polymer ingredient of the toner powder and bonds the final image to the page.
Some smaller mono laser printers take black toner cartridges which can incorporate the laser drum and fuser unit. Larger printers are often designed to use replaceable laser developers and laser drums as separate components.
